2011 – Another Good Year For Mushrooms

First things first, sincere apologies for the lack of mushrooming activity on the blog and the website. I notice I’ve not posted here since April last year, and although I’ve still been actively picking wild mushrooms and taking lots of photographs I’ve not made any blog posts. I’ll try and update the blog more often from now on, I promise! I’ll try and upload the mushroom photos that have been taken over the past year or so, regardless of the time of year, just for reference.

The year so far has been very good for mushrooms here in southern England, with now probably the prime time for collecting mushrooms, as Autumn rears its head after a quite wet and miserable (well, not for mushroom lovers) summer. Obviously all of the rain and damp conditions have been perfect for many different species of mushrooms, and many of these species have been occurring much earlier then usual.

At our local forest we’ve been seeing a lot of Bolette mushroom varieties, with favourites such as the Penny Bun appearing abundantly beneath large Oak trees, and we’ve also seen a few Hedgehog mushrooms already – much earlier then usual as in previous years they tend to wait for the temperature to drop before growing.

Here is a photograph of a mushroom haul from today, with a lot of Bolettes, Hedgehog mushrooms, and Chanterelles.
